IMMERSIONS
Timor Leste
“My trip to Timor Leste recently with ERISJ opened my eyes and my heart beyond my expectations. While initially skeptical about traveling with a group, the journey together in our beat-up Landrover through the physical, emotional and sensory landscapes of Timor was an immensely enriching experience. However, it was the 5 day family stay that was the ultimate highlight for me. I feel incredibly privileged to have been embraced so warmly in to the lives of my host family and their village. It was a rare and authentic opportunity to live, feel and experience this beautiful and fascinating culture close-up.” Stevie Cole, September 2008
"If anything could be living testimony of the experiences and courses offered through the ERISJ, it is that once you start, you're hooked. Not a day goes by when I don't think about or draw on things I learnt in East Timor and during my other Social Justice Studies units," (Final Year Law/Arts student, University of Notre Dame) 2002
"I learnt what it was to be human, in many senses of the word...How community living is central to the East Timorese way of life and how every human has a place and a role within this community framework East Timor taught me to question." (Timor Leste Immersion participant) 2002
Perth & Poverty
"The immersion challenged the students to face reality and to think about how they can be agents for social change" (La Salle College Teacher, on the Perth & Poverty immersion for students), July 2007
"Tracy has done an excellent job in portaying to us the reality of homelessness in our society and I can only hope that I will be strong enough to take what I have learnt on board and help to make a difference", (Student on the Perth & Poverty immersion) July 2007
SPIRITUALITY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE RETREAT
"This had to be one of the most moving and ground shaking retreats I have experienced. It touched me deeply at a number of levels. I felt held and supported by the group, accepted for myself and entered deeply into my own life journey through my engagement in the lives of those whose experiences and insights offered so much to me," as described to the presenters from L'Arche Australia, September 2007
"It was an excellent week - very well organised both by presenters and by the Institute. Lovely atmosphere and space here," Debbie, September 2008
“A very affirming experience which I hope will stay with me for a very long time”
“Excellent. Thought provoking, relevant and a great basis for small group discussion”
“Thank you for the experience of a life-time”
“I felt welcomed and nourished and part of a community”

"I returned from your congress so much aware of the world around me. Now I have started a group at my School that goes to feed homeless people every fortnight. It is all thanks to your inspiration. Now I feel that I can make a difference an I can have a strong influence on what my school does to stop poverty," (Student, John XXIII College)
"Inspired by the Social Justice Congress at ERISJ, I have built a social justice forum to connect our cohort of Social Congress with other Social Justice Activists," (Student, Bunbury Catholic College)
“It was a really interesting and fun experience, and I learnt a lot about what some problems are and what I can do to help” (Student), 2005
“Thanks for your energy and input, a very enjoyable day”
VOLUNTEERING
"The ERISJ courses have an emphasis on learning through service. During my degree I have been blessed with volunteer opportunities as varied and as aged care, soup patrol and working in a remote Indigenous arts centre. Through these experiences I have discovered that I can never give as much as I receive in service," (Second year Social Justice student, University of Notre Dame) 2002
WEBSITE
"Dear David and colleagues,
How fabulous to see the excellent web presentation of your social justice work. You are certainly setting the pace for this in Australia. We in Social Policy Connections are about to let our own website go live, but it is a minnow compared with yours. However, we are open to collaborate as much as possible with yourselves and other groups...Congratulations on your amazing work," Bruce Duncan, July 2008
