Volunteering & Internships

Are you ready to become a volunteer?

Did you know in 2004, 6.3 million Australians over the age of 18 volunteered?  They contributed approximately 836 million hours – on average, 132 hours each!

Volunteers are worth billions to the community and add great value to not-for-profit organisations.  We need people like you who are willing to commit to the volunteering process and who have time to dedicate to these issues.

Three forms of volunteering are available at the ERISJ

  •  Membership of one of the five Activist Groups based at the ERISJ
  •  Social Justice Research projects
  •  Support: event set-up and cleanup, pre-event food shopping, administrative relief, and so on.

The five SJ Activist Groups based at the ERISJ have staggered implementation, to ensure consolidation in their early stages:

  • Aboriginal Australia (commences 2nd half 2010);
  • Rights of the Child (commences 1st half 2011);
  • Millennium Development Goals (commences 2nd half 2011);
  • Environment (commences 1st half 2012); and
  • The ERISJ Giving Circle (commences 2nd half 2012).
Three Steps to becoming an ERISJ Volunteer

At the ERSIJ we are committed to making the volunteer experience an enjoyable one. We work hard to create a supportive environment so we can get the best out of each other.

Step 1 - Get Informed

All volunteering at the ERISJ require that you first attend our three hour Volunteer Training and induction.  The 2010 dates for these training sessions are:

  • Saturday 28 August from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm
  • Saturday 20 November from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm

Email: admin@erisj.org.au to register for either free training event.

Full details of volunteering opportunities will be provided at the training.

Step 2 - Apply

If you are ready to join us after learning some more about us, the next step is to complete a Volunteer Application Form (PDF 43.91Kb). This is the bit where we learn a little more about you.

Step 3 - Interview

Once you have completed the Volunteer Training afternoon we will then schedule you in for an interview with our Director to work together to find the right volunteer position for you.  Refer to our Volunteer Vacancies page for more info. placement in any one of the positions. Placement in any of the positions we advertise will be largely determined by your skills, personality, availability and experience.  We look forward to welcoming you to the team!

Human Rights - a specialised field

Volunteering in the field of Human Rights and Social Justice takes special people.  As Social Justice work immerses itself within human suffering, you can sustain and witness to human hope.  When we support members of marginalised communities and work with impoverished people who suffer social injustices, we must do so with a strong understanding of their situation and consider our impact on their community, lifestyle and human dignity.

Why volunteer with us?  Reasons to become a trained ERISJ Volunteer include:

  • achieve heightened awareness of Social Justice issues in order to become a valued Social Justice Volunteer worker;
  • many positions we make available are in areas otherwise difficult to get involved in as an outsider;
  • volunteering experience with us supports your progress in various fields of employment; and
  • we offer Certificates and documented evidence of volunteer hours worked
