Maureen Lucivero - Accountant

I have come to the Edmund Rice Institute with the hope that I will be able to fulfil a great desire to do some good for others. How to do this has been my big question. I have worked for several charities on a voluntary basis, and have recently joined the Prison Fellowship Council in WA. I am hoping to find practical ways to support social justice in my personal and working life, as well as finding the language to inspire others to do the same.

Most of my working life has been spent in administrative and accounting roles, starting at the age of 15 in my father’s business when I found that I really enjoyed balancing the books.

My most recent work experience has been five years as accountant and then business manager of Rehoboth Christian School in Perth. Earlier, I spent several years in an administrative role in the Fremantle office of Mediterranean Shipping (one of the world’s largest privately owned shipping companies).

I am also interested in teaching; I taught religious education in State Schools for 15 years. This required accreditation, which was obtained by completing two units of a teaching degree at Edith Cowan University. Following this I became a Certified Workplace Trainer through the Australian Institute of Management.

I am married with two adult sons. When my sons went to High School, I started working towards a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University, and for a few years the three of us would sit around the dining room table studying together. Towards the end of my first semester, I was offered full time work as an accountant. So I continued to study externally on a part-time basis, taking seven years to complete the degree, and a further three years to obtain admission to the Institute of Certified Practising Accountants.

I am still studying; at the moment trying to improve my listening skills in the Italian language. I find it very satisfying to listen to my parents-in-law tell stories and jokes around the dining table and to finally understand what they are saying.
