Broome Immersion
2009: 26 Sept - 10 Oct
2010: 25 Sept - 9 Oct
Join us to experience living and working alongside local Aboriginal people in Minyirr Park, a cultural and environmental park which runs alongside stunning Cable Beach. Download 2008 Broome Brochure (PDF 1.9Mb)
This Immersion will provide you with a real insight into Kimberley daily life, engagement with community, NGOs, history and culture, and a profound engagement with Broome’s natural beauty. Our hosts are Yawuru elder Micklo Corpus and local traditional owners who will help us to gain insights into the lives and culture of people in this ruggedly beautiful, diverse landscape.
Some of the highlights:
- camp and live within the Park, cooking and eating together, camp-style – with renowned Cable Beach just over the sand-dunes
- visit pertinent agencies and projects in and around Broome
- maintenance and land rejuvenation activities
- learn how to make traditional Aboriginal instruments such as tapping sticks and boomerangs
- learn about and try bush tucker from the plants and animals native to the region
- visiting speakers will provide an overview of issues facing Kimberley indigenous people. This will include the ‘success stories’ which are rarely reported. The group will also visit agencies and projects within the region to gain some first-hand understanding of these issues.
- each day provides some reflection and debrief time as part of the experiential learning process
The Kimberley is renowned for its spectacular landscape and geography. The Immersion includes a day trip, and possibly an overnight camp, outside of Broome, possibly visiting one of the remote communities of the region.
The Immersion facilitator is Khristo Newall from the ERISJ. Khristo has a background in community development, including urban Australian settings, a brief stint in the Middle East, and significant time in various remote Aboriginal communities. We will be hosted and assisted by local Aboriginal leaders of the Bardi and Yawuru people from the Broome region.
