Exemplary Social Justice Action: What Works and Why - 3 Case Studies

Date: Saturday 24 October 2009, 10am - 5pm
Presenter:  Prof Linda Briskman, Clem Riley, John Waddingham (Download Flyer)

If social justice and human rights are among the leading challenges before humanity, there is nothing more important than the skills to get us there.  This Intensive is delivered by eminent leaders - Clem Riley, Linda Briskman and John Waddingham - three highly effective social justice campaigns.

Presenters:

Professor Linda Briskman is Director of Curtin University’s Centre for Human Rights Education, and a practitioner, researcher and activist in Indigenous policy and practice, asylum seekers and refugees, and professional ethics.  Linda co-authored Human Rights Overboard!, the investigation of Immigration Detention in Australia.

Clem Riley is one of the leaders of Cultural Corridors, one of the most important Aboriginal-led initiatives in WA today.  Clem is former Chairman of the WA Aboriginal Land Trust and was the first Nyoongar to be Deputy Chair of the Australian Indigenous Land Corporation.  Clem will show how handing back management and control of lands to indigenous peoples is today partnered by Cultural Corridors’ other forms of Aboriginal leadership - in juvenile justice, job creation, employment and training, and Aboriginal leadership and mentoring.

John Waddingham is Coordinator of the Clearing House for Archival Records on Timor, and co-founded the Timor Information Service in 1975.  Over the following decade, TIS was one of the world’s most reliable sources of information about East Timor. This was crucial for maintaining international interest in East Timor, and political pressure on Indonesia during the 15 years that Timor was closed to outsiders.
