8 November 2008:  Non-Violent Direct Action: Principles and PracticesNon Violent Direct Action Intensive
10:00AM - 4:30PM

Presenter: Khristo Newall (see below for his background and experience)

Course Outline:
We will look at the history of non-violence in the context of people’s struggles for justice across diverse issues. NVDA has often been associated with spirituality of various persuasions, ranging from radical Christianity, Gandhi’s Hinduism, Buddhism etc. It has also been embraced by others who believe in non-violence as part of a raised human consciousness. It is also seen as a strategic tool in activism, rather than a life philosophy. NVDA can be applied to almost any situation or issue, but requires preparation and application. These sessions will focus on how to put NVDA into practice effectively.

The discussions will focus on;
· Gandhi and the Indian independence movements
· the civil rights struggle in America in the sixties
· grass-roots activism and community campaigning
· exploring the philosophical basis for non-violence, and whether this is important.
· Session building: History, philosophy and principles of non-violence
· Non-violence in action

Presenter: Khristo Newall
Khristo is the ERISJ Immersions Coordinator. He has a background of 15 years in youth work and community development, including working with young offenders, managing a drug rehab program, working in remote indigenous communities and briefly in Iraq. Khristo has also been heavily involved in community campaigning and activism, across a range of social justice issues, but particularly indigenous issues and anti-militarism and peace.
